Lake Tahoe Back Country Skiing

There are few sports as challenging as backcountry skiing, and rightly so. From the very outset, the goal of a backcountry skier is to find some of the remotest and most inhospitable mountainside and conquer it. That's a tall order, and not for the faint of heart.

Lake Tahoe Back Country Skiing

Dates Of Operation: November - April

Most of the peaks and trails in Lake Tahoe have backcountry access for those who want to get off the beaten path. Round Top and Carson Pass are two great locations for backcountry skiing. Mount Rose is a great climb with several imposing down hills, too. One of the Lake Tahoe favorites is Monument Peak, which has a terrific trail to Gardnerville. If you're looking for something more gentle try cross country instead.

It's very important to note that backcountry skiing is not for beginners, ever. That being said, there are kid friendly trails. These mountains are often in harder to reach places, and are not regularly patrolled by safety crews or even other visitors. Only the most experienced skiers or those with plenty of backup should consider backcountry skiing.
